Sidecar data not being used for raw files

Post by ksdehoff »

Hello:

In order to filter my raw (cr2) files I am searching on their rating, wanting to display only my 5 star raw files. I've run into a problem in that the rating program creates *.xmp sidecar files and it appears gphotoshow isn't searching these for the rating, only looking at the cr2 file. Is there some mechanism to enable sidecar file support? This is supposedly an industry 'standard' supported by adobe.

Hello,
gPhotoShow reads raw files using Windows Imaging Component (WIC), it's a generic framework that allows makers to create codecs for their raw file formats and make them available to any windows program, the problem is that most of them provide only basic support to read images and few metadata from raw files. So it is possible Canon codec simply ignores sidecar file. I tested NEF and DNG codecs, only DNG codec developed by Adobe provides full support for metadata.

Its been 7 years since i asked that question - holy crap ;(
We appear to be having the problem with the sidecar file again - this time on jpg files. Its a long story but due to microsoft changes, we can't update the jpg files directly anymore. I've got XMP Subject/IPTC keywords checked and its not selecting the right images when I use the rating filter. Can you think of a different way for us to easily select the pictures we want. We've got a lot of effort historically into flagging them 5 star. For videos we ended up having to change the filename - hoping we don't have to resort to that

We're still using the program. It works great and I had forgotten how to do things until we recently had to mess with it a little. We run our photos on a samsung frame. You can disregard my comment. I have confirmed that apparently WIC doesn't read sidecar files but I figured out what I had forgotten - how to change ratings within the actual image. Sorry to bug you - its a great program - thanks!
