Display location where photo was taken?

Post by leehopkins »

I love your screensaver and it runs constantly in my house displaying personal photos of which I have tens of thousands.

For many years now the vast majority of my photos have been geotagged. I'd love to be able to have the location where the photo was taken displayed on the screensaver. Is that possible? Would you consider adding it?

Hello,
in principle it would be possible to query a webservice and get the location of the picture as long as pictures include gps coordinates.
There are unfortunately practical problems, the worst is that free services only allow limited usage and calling it for every picture for many users would require a commercial license which is rather expensive. In addition automatic location lookup is not always correct, it uses gps coordinates to find the nearest location but sometimes it isn't the right one.
Another issue is that asking to the service for location would add a delay to image display, this delay could be low but depends on internet speed and the remote web service in some cases it could add a few seconds delay.

If you wish to display location name better options are the following:
- Organize you pictures in a way where the last folder names are the location, for example if you store you picture of Rome in c:\pictures\2019\Italy\Rome and add to gPhotoShow c:\pictures when gPhotoShow is configured to display "Partial Path Name" it will display: "2019-Italy-Rome"
- Add location names to pictures metadata, this can be done manually with an editor or using a program that uses location services for example geoSetter then configure gPhotoShow to display location metadata fields.
I use both methods but the directory one is much simpler. GeoSetter is a nice program but setting location on each picture requires lots of time even if it is performed more or less automatically.

Seems like a solid way of doing it. If only it wasn't as time consuming as it is. Still, I think I'll commit to doing this for all the future photos.

I know google photos and other photo tools will display location but I can understand the challenges you may stated.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give geoSetter a try.
